Pill bugs regularly roam around in my garden beds. They are nocturnal isopods, a terrestrial order of crustacean. They eat live plant leaves and roots at night, and hide in moist soil underground during the day. Baby pill bugs remain in the mother's pouch until they grow to about 2 mm long.

I took this picture on May 11, 2014.

Larger (older) pill bugs often have yellowish markings, such as this one I photographed on January 29, 2017.

Here's one walking on the walkway in the west yard.
