Greater Houston has 11 bat species: Mexican free-tailed bat, big brown bat, evening bat, Eastern red bat, Northern yellow bat, Eastern pipistrelle, hoary bat, Seminole bat, Southeastern myotis, silver-haired bat, and Rafinesque's big-eared bat. All of them are insectivores.
I noticed a bat flying alone above my back yard at dusk on April 20, 2017, away through the surrounding trees, and back over the yard again hunting mosguitoes or some other small flying insects. The bat was neither especially large nor small, and it appeared to be a solitary bat. I sat out on the back patio watching until the hunting seemed to stop when it got darker.
