I found this tree cattle, more formerly but less appropriately named bark lice, near the west back corner of my house, in the back yard, on March 29, 2017. This location is close to my crepe myrtle, to which these insects are attracted. They eat fungi, algae, dead bark, and other organic materials on tree trunks and large limbs, and are beneficial to the trees they stay on. They are called "tree cattle" because they tend to live in big groups and move in unison.
