According to wikipedia, the family Elateridae has 965 species in North America. Click beetle larvae are known as wireworms, and they are typically long, narrow, and shiny.

I found this click beetle on October 19, 2013 and put it in a plastic jar for long enough to take its picture.

On March 10, 2017, I found a wireworm, the larva of a click beetle, and put it on the back patio to photograph it. It moved very quickly, probably because it was exposed and wanted to find some dirt to burrow in. Wireworms can live for several years in the soil.
