Day Zero

I moved into my new house on May 26, 2013. This new house has some disadvantages for gardening. The backyard faces north. The front yard has a large live oak and the backyard has a water oak, but a reasonable amount of sunlight sneaks in nonetheless. The soil is the typical houston clay loam. When dry, it is hard as a rock; when moist or wet, you can dig into it easily. It has very little variation except that which I add to it myself.
Here are some photos from the real estate website. They must have just been taken right before I saw the house, because the azelias were blooming when I got there in mid March, 2013. The front yard hasn’t changed much since I moved in.

Here is the view from the back patio, taken with a wide angle lens, like all realtor photos, to make everything look more spacious.

It was a nice looking yard, but I had other plans.
