Beetle Taxonomy
Epuraea ocularis - BugGuide
I saw this beetle, which is only about 2mm long, on multiple tomatoes in May of 2017, especially on ones that had partially rotted and liquefied. According to BugGuide, it is native to tropical Asia, but now almost cosmopolitan, spreading around the world with the fruit trade. The larvae live in rotting fruit, and adults are on flowers or decaying plant matter. They are said to feed on fungi and fruit.
I took this photo of an Epuraea ocularis adult on my patio chair, having fallen off a tomato, on May 16, 2017.
