Millipedes are in the subphylum of arthropods called Myriapoda, which also includes centipedes and other creatures. The eat dead plant material and don't mean any harm to any other animal apart from ones that pose a threat to them. In such situations, they might secrete toxic, noxious chemicals to encourage the threatening being to leave them alone.
I took this video of a Eurymerodesmus millipede on February 11, 2017. The millipede was crawling around in my "S" garden bed.
