February 2014

February 16, 2014

All three trellises were in place. The mound for the small trellises was covered with leaves. The large trellis mound had not been started.
Star jasmine had been cleared from the west end of the back fence, but it still covered the fence and ground to the east of the gas line marker.
False garlic was emerging through the leaves and grass, and a few flowers had formed.
The broccoli was in full bloom, and I saw a honey bee getting pollen from the flowers.
Oriental false hawksbeard (Youngia japonica) was producing achenes.
Catchweed bedstraw was beginning to appear.
A few spinach seedlings were in the garden.

I spotted some mouse-eared chickweed growing by the small sidewalk on the west side of the house.
Red Spider Lily (Lycoris radiata) leaves had grown long in the back yard near the patio because the lawn had not been mowed in months.
Iris leaves were growing out of the bricks on the west side of the house.
Day lily leaves were about a foot long and still thin in the crepe myrtle bed by the patio.
Monkey grass was visible next to the holly fern behind by bedroom, and oriental false hawksbeard basal leaves appeared there in abundance.

I saw on the Buchanan’s website that they were selling tomatoes, so I went there after work and bought a few, along with some peppers. I planted them in the new bed area when I got home. I also sowed some cucumber seeds at the small trellises.

I planted these plants from Buchanan’s in unamended dirt that had only had the St. Augustine grass removed:
  • “Green Lettuce”
  • Strawberry ‘Chandler’
  • Strawberry ‘Quinault’
  • Strawberry ‘Sequoia’
  • Fennel ‘Bronze’
  • Salad Burnet
  • Lemon Grass
Loropetalum was flowering.
The shrimp plant was flowering.
Sweet basil seedlings were growing over an inch tall.
Some wavy light-green lettuce was a couple inches tall.
Lawnflower was visible, but it had not started flowering yet.
Some somwhat colorful chard stood a few inches tall.
Goldenrain tree seedlings were just creating their first true leaves.
I had made a pile of leaves and star jasmine vines near the back of the backyard nook.
The sage in the herb garden looked healthy emerging from leaves. The thyme rosemary, mints, and oregano were also looking good.
