This fungus is largely saprophytic (getting nutrients from decaying organic matter), decaying dead wood tissues. Its upper surface is covered with a dense mass of dark-brown stiff hairlike structures. The underside is covered with minute pores, as are all fungi in the family Polyporaceae. 


These fungi wwer growing on one of the logs that I use to border some of my garden beds on May 15, 2016.
