I have only seen a few gulf coast toads in my back yard, one at a time. They are very common and abundant in the Houston area. Because of a recent genetic distinction made between our gulf coast toad, now with the scientific name Incilius nebulifer, and a similar central american toad also commonly called gulf coast toad, we are encouraged to call our beloved toad the coastal plain toad. I refuse to change, and I will continue to call this toad what I have been calling it since I was a kid.
