January 7, 2014

The temperature fell to an average of 27 degrees in Houston.

I connected the triangle bed to the keyhole bed and expanded it in all directions, then covered it with oak leaves until planting time.
I leaned my old conduit-and-clothesline trellises against the back fence to see where they would fit best.
A leaf bud appeared from the tip of one of the American beautyberry’s bare branches.
A few leaves grew on the Texas lantana.
False garlic leaves were reaching their full size, but no flowers yet.
I found a swamp lily bulb lying among the swamp lilies.
The berggarten sage was looking sickly, with holes in some of its leaves.
Many of the other herbs were starting to grow more robustly.
Turk’s cap had one flower.

January 19, 2014

The grass was short, and it had a lot of oak leaves on it.
Carolina geranium was growing in a white ceramic pot on the back patio and in the square pot by the western corner of the back patio.

January 24, 2014

The temperature dipped to 21 degrees overnight and stayed below freezing during the day. A bit of ice rested on my greens, and the bird baths were frozen.

January 26, 2014

The small trellises and their soil mounds were nearly ready.
The greens in the C bed were 1-2 feet tall.
