False garlic has poked up through the grass in the late winter and early spring up through 2016, covering a large area in the eastern part of my back yard. As the name suggests, the slender green shoots look like garlic or onion chives, but the plant is toxic. However, I was fooled myself when I first discovered it, thinking it was wild onion. I only had one bite, and there were no ill effects.
On February 16, 2014, blades of false garlic were growing through the St. Augustine grass and violet woodsorrel in the back yard, primarily in what became the processing area in 2016.
Some of the flowers were just about to bloom.
