October 2014

Early October

I started creating paths around the garden beds using waste sticks, etc.

I cut down the crepe myrtle behind the kitchen to improve the area for growing herbs.
I trimmed the cut myrtle and piled up the pieces against the back fence.
I had already brought home some discarded reeds and cut them into pieces to use as stakes to delineate different areas of the garden beds after planting seeds.
I had sowed beets, chard, lettuce, bok choy, dinosaur kale, shallots, radishes, and arugula seeds, and many of the seedlings were emerging.
I sowed beans about a month earlier, and they had already grown a good bit by 10/19.
I transplanted of broccoli, cauliflower, kale, collards, bok choy, garlic, green onion, etc.
In the herb garden, I sowed dill and cilantro, and I transplanted rosemary, parsley, garlic chives, green onions, mint, and sage.
The basil was starting to decline.
The papaya tree was about 5 feet tall.
I first noticed dwarf palmetto growing near the water oak.
I saw a five-foot patch of unidentified groundcover right next to the water oak.
The lantana was losing its leaves.
The tall aster plant was flowering.
The bricks under the arbor were nearly covered with anthills.
There is one early-stage compost pile by the west side of the house.
The fennel had stopped flowering but it was still producing new leaves.
The eastern redbud by the front driveway was looking sick.
An escaped ornamental bright green plant was growing in a crack in my driveway.
Asters were flowering by the corner of the driveway and sidewalk.
Purslane and dichondra were growing by the live oak.
The cardinal flower plant looked unhealthy but had some flowers.

I made my first attempt at making pictures that showed the sunlight throughout the day.
I returned pomegranate, satsuma, and lemon trees that I had bought the day before because Bob Randall’s book said it would be better to plant them in the spring.
Some of the mustard spinach was up to 2 inches tall.
Asters near the ferns behind the garage and by the east fence were in full bloom.
The nightshade was flowering.
Lawnflower was flowering.

Set up a light shelf to sprout seeds indoors and grow sprouts and cat grass.
