Didelphis virginiana - Wikipedia

Possums used to venture into my yard quite often, and a mother possum found a way into my attic until I closed off the entryway. They are unassuming animals that struggle to survive in the semi-urban environment of Houston's lawned neighborhoods.

This poor young possum came into my breezeway in April 2014, and I had to protect him or her from my cat. Disappointingly, I haven't seen many possums in my backyard in 2016, ever since I stupidly removed the water oak. My cat has attacked a couple young possums that venture into my small breezeway between my kitchen and garage. After a certain age, they are not small enough to get through the metal bars the prevent my cat from getting out. I am usually able to stop my cat from hurting them by making a lot of noise and acting angry, but he did draw blood on one poor little possum.

This possum wasn't exactly playing dead in the classic drooling, teeth exposing way, but he or she was lying there motionless.

On April 19, 2015, I found another young possum when I lifted the tarp off my leaf mold pen. The next day, I found two hiding there.
