Polistes apachus is a species of social paper wasp native to the western United States.

Like other paper wasps, apache wasps mostly eat caterpillars. They in turn are preyed upon by two species of robber fly, and they are parasitized by the wasp Pachysomoides fulvus. Females chew tiny shreds of wood off of trees or lumber and use them to build their "paper" nests, which typically have about 150 cells.

I found this wasp on one of my raised bed frames on April 14, 2017.

Here is a video of the same wasp collecting wood shavings for her nest.
