This long, black and orange ant was having a nice drink at the bird bath on May 24, 2014. Elongate twig ants have a powerful sting, which they will use to protect their colonies. They eat live insects (especially lepidopteran larvae), and fungus spores, and they tend aphids for honeydew. They are generalists, nesting in a many kinds of plants.
