On February 24, 2017, I chased down this little (about 1" across) checkered skipper in my back yard. It seems if you have enough patience and keep following butterflies as they repeatedly land and flutter away, they eventually agree to stay still so you can get a good photo of them.

This is a male, as can be determined by the larger number of white spots. From a distance the wings appear darker and the pattern sharper.
