Common Chickweed is a plant both people and poultry can eat. It is only found in a few small areas of my yard, especially in the west yard. It is edible raw or cooked, and it should be harvested at the peak of its growth in early spring. Each flower has five "V" shaped petals.

Common chickweed is can be distinguished from mouse-eared chickweed both by the difference in their flower petals and by the different hairiness of their stems. Common chickweed stems have a single line of hairs, as shown in the photo below, and mouse-eared chickweed stems are hairy all over.
