March 1, 2018

Having received my new chipper-shredder on 2/28, I started shredding the leaves I had piled up in the processing area

I had waited long enough to know the few butternut squash seeds I had on hand, which I had planted about a couple of weeks earlier, were not going to emerge. Also, the Marketmore cucumber seeds all sprouted, but none of the "Homemade Pickles" one did. I'm wondering if I just neglected to sow them.

It rained lightly off and on throughout the day. In the middle of the night, it rained very hard, with a lot of thunder and lightning.

Today I sowed seeds in some of the rotation plots and the trellises.
  • In Plot 1, I sowed new store bought Waltham butternut squash because my saved seeds didn't sprout. Before sowing this time, I ground the compost between my hands to break down the leaves, which were already very crumbly.
  • In Plot 2, I sowed:
    • Blue Lake 274 along the west trellis
    • Royal Burgundy along the east trellis
    • Henderson Bush lima beans in the west row between the trellis rows, and continuing to the end of the plot.
    • Eureka Bush beans in the east row between the trellis rows, and continuing to the end of the plot. I also sowed a row along the east edge of the bed where there wasn't a trellis.
    • I left the row along the west edge of the bed where there wasn't a trellis empty.
  • In Plot 8, I sowed "Homemade Pickles" seeds in the mounds thought I had already sowed a couple weeks before. The other cucumber mounds, which I think were sowed with Marketmore seeds, had already sprouted a few days before.
  • On the northern cucumber trellis against the west fence, I sowed saved Armenian Burpless seeds. The "Homemade Pickles" I had sowed, if I actually did, never emerged.
