Fire Ant and Aphid Mutualism - Texas A&M

I have had to deal with fire ants and their mounds in my yard on multiple occasions. Most notably, in 2015, they created a mound that was partially inside my leaf mold pen. Like other ants, fire ants walk along the container boards around my raised beds.
I have found that water mixed with enough molasses to make it dark either kills fire ants or makes them abandon their mound. I have heard that cornmeal kills them.

Fire ants have mutualistic relationships with aphids. In the yard, I have seen ants protecting aphids and drinking their "honey dew," the sugary liquid that aphids excrete through their anuses.
