I found several logs in my backyard with a black, bubbly crust on them. Searching for them on the internet, I first came across the genus Daldinia, but while reading about the jelly fungus Tremella fuciformis, which grows on logs in my backyard, I saw that T. fuciformis only grows as a parasite of the fungus genus Annulohypoxylon and, to a lesser extent, the similar genus Hypoxylon. Looking at pictures of Annulohypoxylon, the bumpiness of the surface matched what I have in the yard, as opposed to the smooth surface of Daldinia.
I took this photo on May 15, 2016.
