Hackberry - Foraging Texas

Duration: Perennial, deciduous Origination: North AmericaEdibility: BerriesStatus in Yard: A few small trees against the backyard fences

Hackberry is a native tree that only made itself known in the yard in May 2014. Two individuals had been hiding under star jasmine until I removed that invasive vine.

One individual has been living in the southeast corner of the back yard, and another, larger on lives nearby against the eastern fence. I cut the latter one back sometimes so I can walk on the fence side of my eastern-most garden bed. The freezes in January 2017 killed its leaves, making them a very dark purple. I shook one of the hackberry saplings, and many leaves fell off, but new leaf buds appeared soon afterwards.

Another one lives by the back fence.  I took a photo of it on on April 19, 2014.
