Crinum americanum - Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
Crinum americanum - Missouri Botanical Garden

Duration: Perennial Origination: Southern USAEdibility: All PartsStatus in Yard: Garden, spreads some

The swamp lilies were here, in what is now my herb garden, when I moved here in 2013. Since then, they spread some through underground rhizomes. I removed most of them in December 2016, and I now have a small pile of yanked swamp lilies that I intend to replant somewhere else. The flowers are beautiful, but they only appear for a short time in the fall, and their weight sometimes makes the flower stalk lean or completely fall over. For most of the year, the long broad leaves just take up space where I could grow herbs.

Swamp lily is considered an aquatic plant, but it grows well on dry ground as well. This one was flowering on June 8, 2013.
