In February, the oak leaves start to fall, the azaleas start growing faster and eventually flower, and I move my tomato transplants into the garden, aware of the risk that they might freeze and die.

2/1/2015 - A lot of beet and maybe spinach seedlings are scattered in patches here and there.
2/1/2015 - The scallions, shallots, and garlic are all multiplying, up to four individuals in each bunch.
2/1/2015 - The broccoli and cauliflower plants near the back fence have large yellow areas around the edges of several leaves. I yanked those off and left them on the ground nearby.
2/1/2015 - All those plants are growing heads. The broccoli should be harvested soon.
2/1/2015 - The butterfly bush is producing new leaves.
2/1/2015 - The shrimp plant has been flowering for a while. I yanked the star jasmine away from it.
2/1/2015 - The lantana has a couple of small leaves.
2/1/2015 - A third milkweed is growing by the two I planted by the west fence last spring.
2/1/2015 - Crickets started singing when the sun went down.
2/3/2017 - Crane flies started coming in the house.
2/5/2017 - The romanesco broccoli flower head was starting to separate, so I cut it off and added it to my lentil dish.
2/6/2017 - Mason bees were hanging out in the azalea flowers.
2/7/2017 - I killed the first mosquito of the year.
2/8/2017 - The Eastern Redbud's first leaf bud started opening.

2/16/2014 - The broccoli was in full bloom.
2/16/2014 - Catchweed bedstraw was beginning to appear.
2/16/2014 - A few spinach seedlings were in the garden.
2/17/2014 - Mouse-eared chickweed was growing by the small sidewalk on the west side of the house.
2/22/2015 - The live oak leaves are falling heavily on the front yard.
2/22/2015 - The honeysuckle is leafing more now that I hung it up on the fence.
2/22/2015 - A couple of the Brassica rapa plants have bolted and are producing small yellow flowers like those of the bok choi.
2/22/2015 - The broccoli plant nearest the house has produced secondary flower heads since I harvested the primary one a few weeks ago.
2/22/2015 - The rouge lettuce is getting close to harvesting size. I have four individuals of different sizes.
2/22/2015 - All the bok choy left from the ones I grew from seed have themselves produced seed pods. They are past the point where I would eat them.
2/22/2015 - yellow wood sorrel, violet wood sorrel, false garlic, dayflower, henbit, prickly sow thistle, and other Asteraceae are flowering.
2/22/2015 - The stems of one Asteraceae on the mound were covered with aphids. This is the same place were aphids covered my black eyes pea plants in the early fall.
2/22/2015 - The peas are starting to grab the climbing lines.

2/22/2015 - The azalea has begun producing new leaves and looks like it will start flowering soon.
2/22/2015 - I spotted some small black bumps on my muscadine, and I’m hoping they are new leaves.
2/22/2015 - Geraniums have filled the big pot on my back patio, as they did last year. No flowers yet.
2/22/2015 - The cleavers in my herb bed are growing faster than I can eat them. I will start clearing them from my herbs more aggressively.
